Until Now. In the world of Yerba, to prepare the perfect cup, it ALWAYS comes down to the two principles.

That's the Thing. Most people at best are only focused on either a product or a service. That's like giving someone from the 1800's an awesome laptop computer without the instruction manual! Chances are, they will not be up on myspace anytime soon.

And That's How It Happened. I was not satisfied finding the best Yerba products in South America. Sure I met with companies that gave me some brochures and such. But I needed to really Discover the ancient traditions of Yerba.


It was Tuesday afternoon and I was experiencing a guided bike tour of Boca, the home of my favorite futbol (soccer) team in the city of Buenos Aires.

I mentioned to our tour guide how much I enjoy the South American tradition of preparing mate. She responded in a somewhat shocking tone:

"Don't You Also Have Mate Back Home?"

I Responded With Caution. Well yes, sort of. Actually I can't really say that either. Sadly, we do technically, but it is nothing like I can experience here now.

And That's When It Happened. Next thing I know it is 7 hours later and I am about 23 miles away from where I was staying, in a place where the "in the know" artisan locals live, located in an underground kitchen.

It is there where I met Luiz, my mate guru. After a little convincing (I think mainly due to the language barrier), he agreed to film an introductory preparation video.



Keeping It Renegade Style. The video is uncut, unedited, and in Spanish... fortunately we had a translator (whose name was conveniently also Luiz), do a wonderful job interpreting his techniques into English. (Thank goodness to, because it's been awhile since I've been in my 10th grade Spanish 101 class). It is simply the most direct, easiest way to really learn this and get it right.

-> A Half Pound Of The Best Yerba Mate In The World. This is what Luize drinks himself. It is a specific type (due to competitors and the nature of the internet, we can not reveal the product's name, but unless you have lived in South America for a few years, you have never seen it before until now), of a very popular brand in Argentina. It's so funny because when I told him the name of the number one mate company in the US... he and his friends began laughing because they never even heard of it in South America (kind of like going to Australia and ordering a Fosters, and having everyone laugh at you; both an embarrassing and insightful experience).

-> Hand Crafted Artisan Yerba Gourd Most people say they know what mate is but what they are referring to is really something else, called "cooked" mate. This is usually how people in the US drink it... just like a tea, either in a bag or a tea strainer. However, you miss out on so much of the mate experience when not preparing it in a traditional Mate Gourd. Our gourds come direct from the Iguazu waterfall region of Argentina and each one goes through a 3 to 4 month long form curing process. It is simply the only vessel to properly drink mate from.
